For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" has them witness again a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained some of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would genetically impart to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.

His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
