Offspring of Ex- South African President Zuma Refutes Terror Charges as Court Case Begins
The child of previous South African Leader Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked accusations at the commencement of her trial in the harbor city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over remarks she published on digital networks four years ago during violent protests in South Africa that came after the detention of her parent.
A seven-day period of disorder in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including theft and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 individuals deceased and led to damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).
The defendant has been accused of inciting this unrest and faces charges of encouragement to commit terror acts and public violence.
Context of the Case
The protests were concentrated in the regions of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the previous president's detention for defying a legal directive to give evidence at an inquiry into accusations of graft while he was serving as president.
The defendant has repeatedly rejected the allegations against her, with her attorney earlier describing the government's case as weak.
She has also consistently claimed the charges against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her father after he established his own party and campaigned against the African National Congress.

A small number of supporters from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders attended the court sessions inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the evidence presented by the state is unconvincing and lacks substantial evidence for a criminal finding.
