Lando Norris Claims Debut F1 World Championship in Yas Marina Despite Verstappen's Race Triumph.
With a performance full of brave racing, Lando Norris has sealed his first F1 world title by taking third place at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was enough for the 26-year-old driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen finished first and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri finished in second.
The driver performed precisely what was necessary in an extremely intense battle at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a series of audacious passing maneuvers, with impeccable execution from both the driver and his team.
A Historic Accomplishment for British Motorsport and McLaren
In taking his maiden world championship, Norris is now the 11th British driver to do so. It also brings to an end McLaren's title drought, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.
It represents a stunning turnaround for the Woking-based outfit, from a low point in the middle of the last decade when they ended up ninth in the constructors’ championship. The comeback has been spearheaded by boss Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an operationally sharp outfit with a race-winning car.

A Tale of Two McLaren
Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for much of the campaign, there was obvious disappointment at stumbling in the later races. Several of poor performances and some errors, such as crashing out in Baku, proved costly. Nevertheless, he finishes the season having shown he is too of champion caliber. To have been so competitive in only his third year in F1, with multiple victories, remains a huge achievement.
Verstappen was also brilliant to take the title battle to the wire. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the win, but having come back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having the points to catch Norris, ending up just a handful of points short.
Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Precision
He secured his success with ruthless precision to take the crown that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two rounds. First a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable tactical decision in Qatar.
It was no little achievement for the driver in his seventh year in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during some difficult times, believing they would come good. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.
Norris performed a remarkable job to stick at his task, maintaining his cool and belief even when under the cosh. Having lost the championship lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Grand Prix
At the start, Verstappen held his first place through turn one, but the main contenders kept it clean. Piastri, using the more durable compound, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.
This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but left Norris under pressure from the Charles Leclerc. Early pit stops saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he overtook rivals quickly and displayed no signs of nerves in his driving.
On lap 19, he made an absolutely bravura move to overtake two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris burst up the inside, almost leaving the track.
This moment was looked at by the race officials, with a few nerve-wracking laps passing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This decisive charge unimpeded was crucial to his championship bid.
Diverging Fates
As Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in form between the two was pronounced. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.
Making his debut with the Italian team had been greeted with excitement but produced what was comfortably his most challenging year ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a top-three finish. He has appeared jaded in the final rounds and will look to reset over the off-season.
