Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
